Thinking About YOU Thinking About ME
Course Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Define what “perspective taking” means.
  • Define three different levels of perspective taking deficits.
  • Define the term “thinking with your eyes” and apply use in educational situations.
  • State the four varied steps of developing social communication skills.
  • Describe a set of activities that can be done to work on each of the four steps of treatment.

“Songs of the Gorilla Nation: My Journey through Autism”
Course Objectives

  • Dr. Prince-Hughes will share her arduous story that has a happy ending—something many people either on the spectrum or dealing with someone who is, rarely hear.
  • By sharing her earliest years (remembering learning to walk and talk), her perceptions, her school years (and what worked for her and what didn’t), as well as going from homelessness to a professorship, her presentations offer something for everyone.
  • People on the spectrum, their parents, educators, healthcare providers, and friends can gain a more liberating view of life on the spectrum, focusing on the many gifts that come from being a highly-sensitive person, rather than the deficit focus.
  • Her most important objective is to convey her experience that disability is context dependent and that any personal challenge has a great deal to do with what might be called a societal pathology in which people constantly try to be things they aren’t.
